Sakia Gunn Rally & Service

On Wednesday, May 11th, the OASIS and the Mission to Dismantle Racism participated in the events marking the anniversary of the murder of Sakia Gunn in Newark, participating in a public anti-violence rally, followed by a Eucharist at the Cathedral.

Sakia was a 15-year-old Newark resident who, early on the morning of May 11th, 2003, was stabbed to death at a bus stop in Newark by an older man after she refused his advances by telling him she was a lesbian.

At 4:00 p.m., the public gathered at the corner of Broad & Market streets in downtown Newark. From there they marched to Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral, located at 608 Broad Street, at which point there was a rally from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The Right Reverend John P. Croneberger, Bishop of Newark, participated in the march and spoke briefly.

At 7:30 p.m., we moved inside Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral for a worship service entitled Celebrating the Lives of Hate-Crime Martyrs. The Very Rev. Dr. C. David Williams, Dean of the Cathedral, celebrated the Eucharist and the Rev'd. Jacquelyn Holland, founder of the Liberation in Truth Unity Fellowship Church, preached. Rev'd. Holland was instrumental in caring for the city's LGBT youth in the tumultuous days following Sakia's death.
