Life is diminished when social and cultural expectations become imperatives. Jesus calls us beyond living comfortably within these social designs to a life filled with the Spirit, where God’s true creation in us can shine forth as a beacon in the wilderness. This retreat will assist us into living joyously and courageously in the light of God’s love.

The Rev'd. Dr. Erin Swenson, retreat leader, is an ordained Presbyterian minister (PCUSA) and a licensed marriage and family therapist. In 1996 she became the first known mainstream Protestant minister to make an open gender transition while remaining in ordained office. She provides counseling for individuals with gender identity issues and their families from her office at the Morningside Presbyterian Church in midtown Atlanta and lectures nationally on issues of gender and faith. Erin is national co-moderator of More Light Presbyterians and is co-founder of the Southern Association for Gender Education, Inc.

"Protecting Our Assets & Planning for Our Future"

In April of 2004, we offered a workshop on financial planning for same-sex couples. The workshop was well-received and we plan to offer it again in the future. If you would like to be invited to this event, please register for our events email list.

OASIS/Lambda Legal Breakfast Meeting for Clergy

The lawsuit filed by Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. on behalf of seven lesbian and gay couples seeking full marriage rights is still pending in the New Jersey Appellate Court. This is a critical time to continue to build public support and create a favorable climate for marriage equality in New Jersey.

To this end we are inviting you to a clergy/faith leaders a breakfast meeting being co-sponsored by The Oasis Ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and Lambda Legal on:

Wednesday May 18th 2005 at 9:30 a.m. at Episcopal House

Episcopal House, the offices of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, is located at 31 Mulberry Street in Newark. (For directions, go to: www.dioceseofnewark.org.)

At this breakfast Lambda Legal attorney David Buckel, will present an update on the case and discuss possible outcomes. In addition, Steven Goldstein of Garden State Equality will discuss upcoming town hall meetings in support of marriage equality. Finally at this breakfast we will offer you and your congregation an opportunity to join in our Pride month "Solidarity Sabbaths for Equality and Justice" campaign. We are asking that you make action pledge cards available to members of your congregations during the month of June. These cards will provide ideas for activities in support of marriage equality.

Educational Resources/Congregational Development Tools:

The OASIS has developed a number of educational courses which we can host or "suitcase" for your parish.

  • All Love Is of God is a six-session opportunity for dialogue about the issue of human sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular
  • Claiming the Promise is a seven-session ecumenical Bible study series that looks at the traditional biblical references which have been troublesome for Christians to defend against homophobia
